mouse river enhanced flood protection project mi-2 pump station
How do you take something as utilitarian as a pump station and as big as a 2-story building and fit it into a residential neighborhood? Our solution was to give it a pitched roof, use massing and proportions to give it scale, use finishes that would conceivable be used on a nice residence, and keep it just a little ways away from other houses. Built with precast concrete walls and steel roof structure, this pump station used a brick finish along with sand-blasted concrete that looks like stucco, and metal shingles that look like asphalt shingles. Windows were also proportioned to feel in-scale with the massing of the building and colors were earthy and muted to not draw attention to this large structure.
